Regular cleaning & doing a routine maintenance check every 3-6 months is important for any timber furniture, no matter the quality of the wood. The best way to clean your table is with a soft sponge using warm soapy water, especially if mould, algae mildew develops. Always allow to dry completely. When cleaning your picnic table it is recommended to check over the joints for signs of looseness or instability. If you notice any, simply re-tension the bolts.
If you don’t protect the surface of the timber, it will naturally turn a silvery grey colour as it ages. Some people desire this look but if you don’t, you must take care of the timber regularly to keep the tones alive and vibrant. Applying a good quality exterior timber oil regularly, depending on how much exposure to the weather it gets. Find a linseed oil based that has water, fungi, mould & UV resistant properties. We use Equisol E365 for all tables as it is made for Australian weather.
The first sign of needing to be recoated will be patchiness and discolouration. Wood moves, swells, and shrinks this should be fully understood and expected when buying any timber product. Sometimes these cracks can open up alarmingly large but remember it is entirely normal and once the inner core has dried the crack will close up. Likewise as the moisture in the air increases so will the free water absorbed by capillary action in the wood and once again the cracks will close up. None of these splits or cracks in the timber will affect its structural integrity or inherent strength.
Please be aware that not doing this can actually cause damage to your picnic table over time, causing its life to be prematurely shorten.
Wood will naturally turn a silvery grey colour as it ages (like the image on the right). To keep the tones alive & vibrant you must use a good quality timber oil with water, fungi, mould & UV resistant properties. Should be done twice a year, depending on how much exposure to the weather.
